# What an affiliate manager costs: hire, freelancer or software

By the RecruitAffiliates.ai team · 27 October 2026 · 8 min read

Facts about other tools come from their own sites, with the date we checked. [Our editorial policy](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/editorial-policy) · [About us](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/about).

In short

For a small Shopify brand that wants 20 new affiliates in a month, our worked estimate puts a full-time hire at about $469 per affiliate recruited, a freelancer at $111 to $211 if recruiting is in scope, and recruitment software with your own time at about $93. The software route is $79 a month plus roughly 33 hours of work. The hours and the 1 in 10 join rate are our assumptions, shown so you can change them.

An affiliate manager costs about $6,563 a month in pay at the US median for marketing specialists. With benefits that is about $9,376. A freelancer's retainer is $2,000 to $4,000 a month. Recruitment software starts at $79 a month, but you still do part of the work.

An **affiliate** is someone who sends buyers to your shop and earns a **commission**, a cut of each sale. An **affiliate manager** is the person who recruits those people, approves them, helps them sell and pays them. Our guide to [what affiliate management covers](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/what-is-affiliate-management) lists the jobs. This guide prices the three ways to get them done.

We make RecruitAffiliates.ai, so we have a stake in the software row. Every figure and assumption is shown, so you can check the maths.

## What are the three routes?

1. **Hire.** One employee does the job, full time or part time.
2. **Freelancer.** One self-employed person runs your program for a monthly fee, called a **retainer**.
3. **Software.** A tool finds the affiliates and drafts the first emails. You read the replies and decide.

An agency is a fourth route. Our guide to [agency or software](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/affiliate-marketing-agency-or-software) puts agency retainers at $2,500 to $5,000 a month. That overlaps the freelancer range above. In our view the difference is scope: an agency usually covers more than one person's upkeep.

## What does a hire cost?

We use the closest US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) group, market research analysts and marketing specialists. Its median pay was $78,760 a year in May 2025 ([BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/market-research-analysts.htm), page updated 27 August 2026, checked 27 October 2026). The **median** is the middle pay when you line everyone up. The lowest tenth earned under $43,390 and the highest tenth over $155,480.

Salary is not the whole cost. In June 2026, benefits were 30.0% of employer pay costs in private industry ([BLS](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ecec.nr0.htm), published 9 September 2026, checked 27 October 2026). So wages are 70.0%. Here is the maths:

- Pay a month: $78,760 ÷ 12 = $6,563.
- With benefits: $6,563 ÷ 0.70 = $9,376 a month.
- Pay an hour: $78,760 ÷ 2,080 hours = $37.87. With benefits: $54.09.

Indeed gives a figure for the role itself. Its US average for an affiliate marketing manager is $93,968 a year. That comes from 222 job postings ([Indeed](https://www.indeed.com/career/affiliate-marketing-manager/salaries), updated 16 October 2026, checked 27 October 2026). With benefits that is $11,187 a month. Pay in job ads may run higher than what a small shop can offer.

## What does a freelancer cost?

One consultancy says freelancer retainers run $2,000 to $4,000 a month ([Jolly Consulting](https://jollyconsulting.ai/blog/affiliate-management-agency-pricing), updated 17 August 2026, checked 27 October 2026). The same page says freelancers typically offer basic upkeep, such as approving partners and sending a monthly newsletter. It adds that a freelancer may manage 20 or more clients at once.

Treat this as one seller's range, not a market survey. Ask for a written scope. If recruiting is not in the scope, you still do that part.

## What does software cost?

Software for the finding stage costs a flat fee. The RecruitAffiliates.ai Launch plan is $79 a month and includes 200 email lookups, with a 7-day free trial (checked 27 October 2026, see [pricing](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/pricing)). Grow is $199 a month.

It does not track sales or pay commission. You need a tracking app on every route, so we left it out of the table. AffiliateRail is a separate product from the same team. Its own Launch plan shows $29 a month as a founding price and $59 as the usual price. It covers programs earning up to $10,000 a month from affiliates ([AffiliateRail pricing](https://affiliaterail.com/pricing), checked 27 October 2026). It takes 0% of payouts.

## How many hours is the job?

This part is our estimate, not a measured figure. Let's say you want 20 new affiliates in one month. We assume 1 in 10 people you write to joins. So you write to 200 people.

By hand, we assume each person takes 15 minutes. You find the site, judge the fit, hunt for an email and write a note. That is 50 hours. Add 30 minutes to onboard each of the 20 who join, which is 10 hours. The total is 60 hours.

With software, the list and the email address arrive ready. We assume each person takes 5 minutes to review and approve a drafted email. That is about 17 hours. Add the same 10 hours of onboarding for 27 hours.

Software adds work the 5 minutes do not cover. You read about 650 rows to find 200 people with an email (see the scan below). We assume 30 seconds a row, which is about 5 hours. You also run about seven searches at 5 minutes each, which is about 1 hour. That brings the software route to 33 hours.

Is a 1 in 10 join rate fair? We have not measured one. At 1 in 20 you would write to 400 people, and the hours rise by more than half on both routes.

## How does the monthly cost compare?

Below, every hour you spend is priced at $54.09, the BLS median with benefits. Swap in your own hourly value if it is higher or lower. Commission paid to affiliates is not included, because it is the same on every route.

| Route | Cash a month | Hours of work | Total, hours priced at $54 | Per affiliate recruited, at 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do it by hand | $0 | 60 (you) | $3,245 | $162 |
| Software (Launch) | $79 | 33 (you) | $1,864 | $93 |
| Freelancer, only if recruiting is in scope | $2,000 to $4,000 | 60 (theirs, our estimate) and 4 (you, reading reports) | $2,216 to $4,216 | $111 to $211 |
| Hire, BLS median pay | $9,376 | 60 of about 173 paid hours | $9,376 | $469 |
| Hire, Indeed average pay | $11,187 | 60 of about 173 paid hours | $11,187 | $559 |

The software total is $79 plus $1,785 for the 33 hours, which is $1,864. The freelancer total adds 4 hours of your time at $54.09, which is $216. The by-hand total is 60 hours at $54.09.

Three things stand out. The hire costs the same whether they do 60 hours of recruiting or 173. The cost per affiliate falls only if you give them more to do. The freelancer is cheaper than the hire but you still read their reports. Software cuts the hours, but it is not free, because the replies and the onboarding stay with you.

## How many people does a scan return?

Software only helps if it finds enough people. We scanned 30 public Shopify brands on 22 October 2026. A first search showed a median of 92 people per brand. An email was on record for 31% of them, a median of about 30 per brand ([method and counts](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/shopify-affiliate-scan-2026)).

At 31%, writing to 200 people means looking at about 650 rows. That is about seven first searches at the median of 92. It also assumes every email lookup works. Some will fail verification, so 200 lookups for 200 people leaves no room for misses. Launch includes 20 searches a month. On 24 October 2026 we searched 3 of the brands again on a paid plan with a full setup. They showed a median of 693 people each.

The scan counts people shown and emails found, not people who join. For the real join rate, run your own first campaign. Our guides on [recruiting affiliates](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/how-to-recruit-affiliates) and on [your first 10 affiliates in 14 days](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/first-10-affiliates-in-14-days) show the steps.

## Which route fits which brand?

These are our views, not rules.

- **Under 20 affiliates, small budget.** Software and your own time can work. See [recruiting affiliates with no budget](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/recruit-affiliates-shopify-no-budget).
- **No spare hours at all.** A freelancer may suit you, if the scope includes recruiting.
- **Enough work to fill the week.** A hire can make sense then. Think recruiting, support, fraud checks and payouts.
- **Both.** Some brands use software for finding people and a freelancer for the rest.

The tools differ on price and on what they do. Our list of [affiliate recruitment software](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/best-affiliate-recruitment-software) compares them.
