In short

Influencer marketing means getting people with an audience to talk about your product. With little money, try three things in order: a free gift, then a commission link, then a paid post only for people who already sell. Run the first two on 25 to 30 people over four weeks, track three numbers and decide at the end.

Influencer marketing for a small business means getting people with an audience to talk about your products. With little money, try three things in this order: a free gift, then a commission link, then a paid post only for people who already sell. Start with 25 to 30 people, give it four weeks and track three numbers.

An **influencer** is anyone whose audience trusts what they say about products. That can be a TikTok maker, a blogger, a podcaster or a reviewer. Shopify's own guide for small businesses says this kind of marketing "does not always require paying influencers" ([Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/blog/influencer-marketing-small-business), 13 July 2026). You can start with product and a link.

This page is the whole picture and the order to try things. Each step links to a page that goes deeper.

## What are your options when money is tight?

You have three ways to work with a creator, and each answers a different question.

| Option | What you give | Cost if it flops | What you learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Gift** | Free product, no post required | Product and postage | Who likes it enough to talk about it |
| **Commission** | A tracked link or code and a cut of each sale | Nothing, unless you sent a sample | Whose audience buys |
| **Paid post** | A fixed fee for a set piece of content | The whole fee | Nothing about sales. You buy content |

A **commission** is a share of each sale a creator brings in. A **paid post** is a flat fee for a post, whatever it sells. [Creator partnerships: gift, fee or commission](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/creator-partnerships-structure) shows how to set up each one and how to mix them.

## In what order should you try them?

Try them cheapest first, and move on only when the step has told you something. This order is our suggestion, not a rule from a study.

1. **Make your own posts first.** Shopify advises posting some of your own content before you contact anyone, so a creator can see what your brand is about. A handful of posts or product photos on one profile will do.
2. **Gift first.** It costs the least and tests the product with outsiders. Move on when a few people have received it and you have asked what they thought. [Product seeding for Shopify brands](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/product-seeding-shopify) covers the steps.
3. **Offer commission next.** Give everyone who posted, or who replied warmly, their own link or code. You pay only when a sale happens. Move on when at least one person's link has produced an order.
4. **Pay for a post last.** Pay only a person whose link has already sold, and only for something you need by a set date. A fee buys content, not sales.

If nobody sells after step 3, do not jump to paid posts. Change the product you gift, the people you ask or the offer, then run steps 2 and 3 again.

## Who should you ask first?

Ask people who already talk about products like yours. Three groups are worth a look.

- **Your own customers.** Anyone who has tagged you or posted your product is a warm first ask. This is our suggestion, and it costs nothing.
- **People who cover your rivals.** If someone has reviewed a brand like yours, they know your kind of product.
- **Small creators.** They often accept product alone and reply faster. See [nano influencers](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/nano-influencers) and [what a micro-influencer is](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/what-is-a-micro-influencer) for how the size bands differ.

Look beyond Instagram and TikTok. We ran a first search for 30 public Shopify brands on 22 October 2026. It showed 2,924 people. Of those, 1,877 (64%) had a review, roundup or comparison page as their best evidence. TikTok and Instagram gave only 66 people between them, and Instagram counts may be low. A typical brand got 92 people (the middle result; the range was 35 to 188). See the [method and limits](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/shopify-affiliate-scan-2026).

First-search results for a natural skincare brand: 124 matches, including TikTok creators, podcasts and a review site, each with a fit score.

A first search for a natural skincare brand, 22 Oct 2026. Individual creators' details are blurred, as are email addresses and rival brand names.

Not everyone shown is a promoter. We had an AI model read the titles and addresses of 30 random rows without opening any page. It judged 9 not to be promoters (30%, likely range 17% to 48%), so open each page before you write. Our guide to [your first 10 affiliates in 14 days](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/first-10-affiliates-in-14-days) shows one way to build the list.

## What does a four-week plan look like?

Here is a plan for one person with a few hours a week. The numbers are our suggestion.

| Week | What you do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one product. Set up a code or link for each person. Write your gift line. Open a sheet. Post your own content. | You can send a link and a code in one minute |
| 2 | Build a list of 25 to 30 people. Email each one and ask if they'd like to try the product. Use this [outreach email template](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/influencer-outreach-email-template). | Everyone has had one email |
| 3 | Ship to the people who said yes, with a short card ([gifting note examples](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/influencer-gifting-note-examples)). Offer commission to anyone who posts or replies warmly. | Every yes has a box or a link |
| 4 | Count the three numbers below. Ask the people who got a box what they thought. Decide what to repeat. | You've written down one thing to keep and one to drop |

If you'd rather run a standing program with perks and rules, see [how to start a brand ambassador program](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/brand-ambassador-program-shopify). Don't ask for a post in week 2. Ask if they'd like to try the product. [PR package for influencers](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/pr-package-for-influencers) lists what to put in.

## What does month one cost?

You pay for product and postage, and nothing else if you stop there. Let's say you gift 25 people. Each item costs $10 to make and $6 to post. That is 25 × $16 = $400.

Commission costs nothing up front. Say your rate is 10% and an order is $40. Each sale costs you $4. Check the rate against your margin before you promise it. [What commission a Shopify program should pay](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/what-commission-should-my-shopify-affiliate-program-pay) has a table by category. Swap in your own numbers.

A paid post is the one step with a price you can't predict. Ask for a quote from two or three creators and compare. We won't invent a price for you.

## What do you have to say about gifts?

Ask each person to say it was a gift. The FTC's guide for influencers says to disclose it if you got anything of value to mention a product, and free products count. It adds that it's the influencer's job to disclose. Its example wording is "Thanks to Acme brand for the free product" ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers), November 2019). A plain line like that is often enough if it is hard to miss, and a hashtag is optional. Put the request on the card.

The brand still has a job. The FTC's guidance for businesses says your company is ultimately responsible for what people do on its behalf. It advises a reasonable program to train and monitor your network ([FTC endorsement questions](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking), checked 26 October 2026). Tell each creator what to write, then check the post.

This is US guidance, and rules differ by country. It is not legal advice.

## Which three numbers should you track?

Keep it to three, in a sheet.

1. **Sent and replied.** How many people you asked, and how many said yes.
2. **Posted or shared.** How many of the yeses put the product in front of their audience. Ask them. Don't chase.
3. **Sales from each link or code.** This is the number that matters. Shopify's guide suggests checking the unique link you gave each influencer.

Cost divided by sales gives you cost per sale. Don't judge before week 4. A box can sit unopened for days.

## What mistakes should a small brand avoid?

- **Shipping to everyone.** Ask first, then ship to the yeses.
- **Starting with the biggest names.** They cost more. Begin with people closer to your size.
- **Paying before you've tested.** A fee buys content, not sales.
- **No link or code.** You can't tell which gift worked.
- **Giving up after one round.** One round of 25 shows you what to change. The second tells you more.

## Where RecruitAffiliates.ai fits

RecruitAffiliates.ai helps with the list and the first email. It doesn't pack or post your product, and it doesn't pay creators.

You enter your website. It finds websites, blogs, review sites, newsletters, podcasts, YouTube channels, and Instagram and TikTok creators already covering shops like yours. Each one comes with the page that shows why, so you can judge the fit. It looks for each person's email and checks what it finds, so you get a [verified email](https://docs.recruitaffiliates.ai/credits#what-each-result-means). AI drafts a personal first email. You can add a free-item line and your affiliate sign-up link when you approve the draft.

You approve it, and it sends from your own inbox. Replies land in that inbox. A campaign is four emails in one thread. A new mailbox sends 5 first emails a day in week one, building to 30 at most. See the [Shopify page](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/for/shopify) for the five steps.

Launch is $79 a month for one brand, with a 7-day free trial and no card.
