In short

A nano influencer is a creator with roughly 1,000 to 10,000 followers. Sources disagree on the exact range. A small brand can start with them: one UK guide says much nano work is paid in free product alone.

A nano influencer is a creator with a small following, usually 1,000 to 10,000 people, who often has a close bond with them. For a young Shopify brand they are a low-cost place to start, because one UK guide says a large share of their work is paid in free product alone.

An **influencer** is someone whose recommendation people follow. A **follower** is a person who chose to see that account's posts. "Nano" means the audience is tiny.

## What counts as a nano influencer?

Most sources say 1,000 to 10,000 followers on one platform. Brandwatch uses that range, and notes that some definitions stop at 5,000 ([Brandwatch](https://www.brandwatch.com/social-media-glossary/nano-influencer/), checked 26 October 2026). The Association of National Advertisers (ANA), a US trade body, puts nano at anything below 10,000, with no lower limit. Its August 2026 report, *Influencer Marketing: Reducing Waste and Optimizing Investment*, sets those tiers, as PPC Land reports ([PPC Land](https://ppc.land/ana-finds-67-of-marketers-call-influencer-measurement-the-hardest-step/), checked 26 October 2026).

So the floor is 1,000 or nothing, and the ceiling is 5,000 or 10,000, depending on who you ask. PPC Land adds that some agencies count accounts under 1,000 as nano too. No official body sets the line. Pick one range for your own list and stick to it. We use 1,000 to 10,000.

## How is a nano different from a micro influencer?

The difference is size, and what size does to the relationship. A **micro influencer** has a bigger audience, often 10,000 to 100,000. Here is how the two compare for a small brand.

| | Nano | Micro |
|---|---|---|
| Followers (Association of National Advertisers tiers) | Below 10,000 | 10,000 to 100,000 |
| Reach of one post | Small | Larger |
| First offer we suggest | Free product, then commission | Free product plus commission, or a fee |
| How many you need | Many | Fewer |

Sources draw the micro line differently. HypeAuditor's micro tier, for example, stops at 50,000 followers.

**Engagement** is the share of followers who like, comment or share. Small accounts tend to get more of it per follower. Here is what two sources report for Instagram.

| Source | Nano | Micro |
|---|---|---|
| [Brandwatch](https://www.brandwatch.com/social-media-glossary/nano-influencer/) | Regularly 3.5% or higher | Not given |
| HypeAuditor 2026, as quoted by [Instapect](https://instapect.com/blog/micro-vs-nano-influencers) | 1.78% | 0.54% (10,000 to 50,000 followers) |

The figures differ, and only HypeAuditor compares the two tiers. It puts nano well above micro. Rates vary by platform and by niche. Both sources were checked on 26 October 2026.

## When does a nano beat a big creator?

Three cases stand out.

**You have no ad budget.** A nano will often take product instead of cash. One UK guide says "a huge chunk" of nano work is product only, and when cash is paid it sits around £50 to £250 a post ([Lilach Bullock](https://www.lilachbullock.com/what-is-a-nano-influencer-follower-count-and-pay/), checked 26 October 2026). That is one writer's view for the UK, so treat it as a rough range. As arithmetic on that range, paying 20 nano creators £50 to £250 each would cost £1,000 to £5,000 a round. A product round costs the item and shipping for each.

**Your product needs trust.** Think skincare, supplements or a mattress topper. A friend-sized voice saying "I use this" can matter more than a big reach.

**You sell to a niche.** A creator whose 4,000 followers all keep chickens is a better fit for a hen feeder than a lifestyle star with 400,000.

A nano is a poor fit when you need a lot of people to see something fast. One nano post reaches few people. You make up for that by working with many of them.

## What should I offer a nano influencer?

Start with free product. Ask for nothing you can't give back, such as a promise to post. If they like it and post, offer **commission**, which is a cut of every sale they send, tracked with their own link or code.

A simple ladder works well:

1. Send the product, with a short note.
2. If they post, thank them and offer a link with a commission.
3. If sales come in, raise the rate or send more product.

In our read of 168 public Shopify programs, the median base commission is 10%. See [what commission a Shopify program should pay](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/what-commission-should-my-shopify-affiliate-program-pay) before you set yours.

Put the rule in writing in your first message. Say what they get, what you hope for, and that they are free to say no.

## What should go in the first parcel?

Keep the first parcel small and easy to post. One full-size product, one card, and nothing that needs setup.

On the card, say who you are and why you picked them. Name one real post of theirs you liked. Say the gift has no strings, except that any post should be marked as a gift. Do not ask for a set number of posts.

Check postage before you send. A box to another country can cost more than the product, and customs can hold it. For the first 20, stay in your own country.

## How do I find nano influencers for my brand?

You have three free places to start.

- **Your own customers.** Search your brand name and tagged posts on Instagram and TikTok. People who already post your product are the warmest list you have.
- **Local creators.** Search your city or region plus your product type. A local creator may visit, pick up the product and post the same day.
- **Hashtags and rival tags.** Look at who tags the shops you compete with. Small accounts with a clear niche stand out fast.

Doing this by hand takes hours. RecruitAffiliates.ai does the first pass. On 22 October 2026 we ran a first search on 30 public Shopify brands. It showed a median of 92 people per brand, and for 916 of the 2,924 people shown (31%) it found an email address, a median of 30 a brand. We did not measure audience size, so we can't say how many were nanos. The figures show the scale of a first list. The method and limits are on [the study page](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/who-promotes-shopify-brands-2026).

First-search results for a US supplement brand: 188 people shown, led by gut-health podcasts and bloggers who review a rival brand.

The largest first search in the study, 188 people shown. The median was 92. It shows scale, not nano accounts. Individual creators' details are blurred, as are rival brand names.

## What are the risks?

Reach is small. One post by one nano may bring a handful of visits. You need many of them to move sales, and each one takes time to find, to email, and to chase. We suggest starting with about 20 and judging the group after a month.

Numbers can mislead. A small account can have fake followers or a lucky post. Open their last ten posts and read the comments. Real replies from real people matter more than a follower count.

Rules still apply. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) counts free product as a "material connection", which means a link between brand and creator that readers would want to know about. A creator who gets free product should say so ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers), checked 26 October 2026). The FTC's own question-and-answer page adds that a brand sending free product should ask the creator to disclose the gift clearly in any post, and should monitor the tagged posts ([FTC Q&A](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking), checked 26 October 2026). Ask every creator to mark a gifted post clearly.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a nano influencer?

A creator with a small audience, usually 1,000 to 10,000 followers on one platform. Sources disagree on the exact floor and ceiling, so choose a range and use it the same way every time.

### How much do nano influencers charge?

Many take free product only. One UK guide puts paid work at about £50 to £250 a post. Start with product, then offer commission if they post.

### Should I gift nano influencers?

Yes, if they fit your product and you can afford the cost of the item and postage. Gifting is the usual first step. Do not demand a post, and ask them to mark it as a gift when they do.

### How many nano influencers do I need?

We suggest about 20 to start. One post from one nano reaches few people, so you need a group. Judge the group after a month, then keep the ones who sent sales and drop the rest.
