In short

Affiliate management is the day-to-day work of running your affiliate program: finding and approving affiliates, supporting them, tracking sales, paying commission and reviewing results. You can do it yourself, hire for it, pay an agency or use software. One agency's public guide (checked 26 October 2026) lists retainers of $2,000 to $25,000 or more a month. Many Shopify tracking apps cost under $50 a month, and some also take a share of sales.

Affiliate management is the work of running your affiliate program after it goes live. It covers finding and approving affiliates, helping them sell, tracking their sales, paying commission and checking what works.

An **affiliate** is someone who promotes your product and earns a cut of each sale they send. That cut is the **commission**. Your **program** is the offer, the rules and the system that tracks it all.

## What does affiliate management cover?

Six jobs make up the work. Shopify describes the affiliate manager as the person who recruits, onboards and scales a brand's affiliate partners ([Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/blog/affiliate-manager), checked 26 October 2026). Their list has four areas: recruiting, performance, payouts and compliance. **Compliance** means making sure affiliates follow the rules, such as saying when a post is paid or gifted. We split the work into six jobs because support and approval are real work too.

| Job | What it means in plain words | A typical task |
|---|---|---|
| Recruit | Find people who might promote you and ask them | Email 20 bloggers a week |
| Approve | Decide who joins, and check they follow your terms and the ad-disclosure rules | Check a new applicant's site |
| Support | Help affiliates sell | Send links, images and product news |
| Track | See which sale came from whom | Check the tracking link works |
| Pay | Send commission on time and correctly | Pay once a month, after refunds |
| Review | See what works and change it | Drop affiliates who send nothing |

**Tracking** means recording that a sale came from an affiliate's link, so the right person is paid. A **payout** is the money you send them.

In our view, many brands get stuck on the first job, recruiting, because a program with no affiliates tracks nothing. See [how to recruit affiliates](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/how-to-recruit-affiliates) for that part.

## Who does affiliate management?

You have four choices.

1. **You do it.** A common start for a small brand. It costs time, not cash.
2. **You hire a manager.** One person, full or part time.
3. **An agency does it.** Often called outsourced program management, or OPM.
4. **Software does the heavy parts.** Tools track sales, pay commission or find new affiliates.

Many brands mix them. For example, you use a tracking app, a tool to find affiliates, and your own hands to write the emails.

## What does affiliate management cost?

It depends on the route. These are public figures from vendors and publishers, with the date we checked. A **retainer** is a fixed fee you pay every month. Treat each figure as a rough range. They cover the cost of management only. The commission you pay affiliates comes on top.

| Route | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Your time, plus any app fee | n/a |
| Hire a full-time manager | $50,000 for a junior role to over $100,000 for a senior one, per year | [Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/blog/affiliate-manager), checked 26 October 2026 |
| Agency retainer | $2,000 to $25,000 or more a month, plus setup of $1,000 to $10,000 (the page also gives $3,000 as a floor elsewhere) | [Hamster Garage](https://www.hamstergarage.com/article/affiliate-management-services-cost) (an agency), checked 26 October 2026 |
| Top-tier agency | $8,000 to $25,000 a month, plus 5% to 15% of affiliate sales | [Track360](https://track360.io/blog/outsourced-affiliate-program-management-saas-vs-agency-2026) (a software vendor), published 9 May 2026, checked 26 October 2026 |
| Tracking app | Often free to about $50 a month, some add a share of sales | Our [platform guide](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/best-affiliate-platforms-for-consumer-brands), checked 23 October 2026 |

The agency page gives its own rule of thumb. Below about $30,000 a month in affiliate sales, a full retainer may eat too much of your **margin**. That is the profit you keep on each sale. For an early-stage program it lists $2,500 to $5,000 a month. Both pages come from companies with something to sell, so ask three agencies for quotes before you trust any figure.

Software costs less, but it does not do the work for you. A tracking app records sales and, in some apps, pays commission. It does not email bloggers. Our guide lists UpPromote from a free plan, GoAffPro Premium at $49 a month and Refersion at $39 a month plus 3% of sales.

## Can I manage affiliates myself?

Yes, and many small Shopify brands start that way. As a rule of thumb, the work is light with five affiliates and heavy with fifty.

The slow part is finding people. On 22 October 2026 we ran a first search on 30 hand-picked public Shopify brands. The **median** brand, the middle one when you line them up, had about 92 people shown. For 916 of the 2,924 people shown (31%) it found an email address, a median of 30 a brand. We read the title and address of 30 of those people. About 7 in 10 looked like real prospects (a small sample). The search took about four minutes a brand. Writing to them, approving them and paying them is still your job. The method and limits are on [the study page](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/who-promotes-shopify-brands-2026).

First-search results for a natural skincare brand: 124 people shown, including TikTok creators, skincare podcasts and a review site, each with a fit score.

A first search for a natural skincare brand, 22 Oct 2026. The median across the 30 shops studied was 92. Individual creators' details are blurred, as are rival brand names.

## What tools do I need?

You need two kinds, and they do different jobs.

- **A tracker.** It gives each affiliate a link or code, records sales and works out what you owe. Some can pay it out too. Examples are UpPromote, GoAffPro and Refersion.
- **A finder.** It shows who already promotes shops like yours and how to reach them. RecruitAffiliates.ai is one. We make it, so weigh that. Others are listed in our guide to [affiliate recruitment software](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/best-affiliate-recruitment-software).

A network is a third route. It is a marketplace that handles tracking and payment for a fee. See [network or direct recruiting](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/affiliate-network-vs-direct-recruiting) to choose.

## What are the signs you need help?

Look for these.

- You have a program page but fewer than ten active affiliates (our rule of thumb).
- You pay commission by hand and it takes an afternoon.
- Affiliates ask questions and wait days for an answer.
- You can't say which five affiliates bring most of your sales.
- You have not emailed a new prospect in a month.

If the problem is finding people, a finder tool usually costs far less than an agency (see prices in our [platform guide](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/best-affiliate-platforms-for-consumer-brands)). If it is payouts, use a tracker. If it is everything, get quotes. One agency's guide says that below about $30,000 a month in affiliate sales, a retainer can cost too much of your margin. Get quotes before you sign.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does an affiliate manager do?

They recruit and approve affiliates, support them, watch tracking, handle payouts and review results. At a small brand one person does all of it. At a large brand a team splits the work.

### How much does affiliate management cost?

One agency's public guide (checked 26 October 2026) lists retainers of $2,000 to $25,000 or more a month. A full-time hire costs $50,000 to over $100,000 a year, per Shopify's guide. It does not say where the range comes from. Many tracking apps cost under $50 a month, and some also take a share of sales.

### What is outsourced program management?

It means paying an agency to run your affiliate program. It is often shortened to OPM. The agency recruits, supports and reports. You pay a monthly retainer. Track360 says top agencies add 5% to 15% of sales.

### Is an affiliate manager the same as an affiliate network?

No. A manager is a person or team who runs your program. A network is a marketplace that connects brands and affiliates and handles tracking and payment for a fee.

### How many affiliates do I need before I ask for help?

There is no fixed number. Ask for help when a job eats your week, such as hand payouts or slow replies. As a rule of thumb, that comes before fifty affiliates for many small brands.
