# What is affiliate recruitment? A plain-words guide for brands

In short

Affiliate recruitment is finding and signing the people who will promote your brand for a commission. It has four steps: find, contact, approve and activate. In our scan of 30 Shopify brands, 64% of the people shown had a review, roundup or comparison page as their strongest evidence. In a small check of 30 rows, 9 were not promoters.

**Affiliate recruitment** is finding people who will promote your brand and signing them up to your program. You pay them a commission when someone buys through their link. It is the job of getting new affiliates in the door, not the job of running them once they are in.

An **affiliate** is a person or a site that sends buyers to your shop and earns a cut of each sale. That cut is the **commission**. A **program** is the set of rules you publish: what you pay, how long a click counts, and how people join.

## What does affiliate recruitment mean?

These are two plain definitions, from a general encyclopedia and a software vendor's glossary, not research. In affiliate marketing, affiliates "receive a commission for each visit, signup or sale" they bring to a merchant ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affiliate_marketing), checked 26 October 2026). Recruitment is the step before that. Partnero's glossary defines it as "the process of attracting and signing up new partners to an affiliate program" ([Partnero](https://www.partnero.com/glossary/affiliate-recruitment), checked 26 October 2026).

Notice what is missing. Setting up the program is not recruitment, and neither is tracking sales. Those come first and after. Recruitment is about people: who to ask, what to say, and who to let in.

## How is recruiting different from managing and tracking?

Three jobs sit inside any affiliate program. They get mixed up often, and each needs different tools.

| Job | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiting | Finding people and getting them to join | Emailing a blogger who reviews brands like yours |
| Tracking | Counting clicks and sales, then paying commission | An affiliate app on your store |
| Managing | Helping affiliates once they have joined | Sending a sale brief, fixing a broken link |

An affiliate app handles tracking and payouts. Finding the right people is a separate job. Recruiting tools fill that gap. Our guide to [affiliate prospecting tools](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/affiliate-prospecting-tools) compares them.

## What are the four steps of affiliate recruitment?

Every recruiting effort runs through the same four steps, whether you do it by hand or with software.

1. **Find.** Build a list of people who already write about brands like yours. Search your rivals' names, your product types and your customers' questions.
2. **Contact.** Send a short, personal first email. Name something real from their page and ask one thing: do they want to join?
3. **Approve.** Look at each person who applies or says yes. Decide whether coupon sites fit your program, and turn away anyone whose audience does not.
4. **Activate.** Give each new affiliate their link, their code and a short brief. An affiliate who never posts is not recruited. They are a name on a list.

In our view, step four is easy to skip. A person can say yes and then do nothing. A quick welcome note may help them start. Ask them to say they earn a commission, close to the link. The US Federal Trade Commission gives the sample line "I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post." It also says the company is ultimately responsible for what others do for it ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking), checked 26 October 2026).

Here is a first email that follows these steps, in about 35 words:

Hi Sam, I read your "best vitamin C serums" roundup. We make a vitamin C serum for sensitive skin. You would earn 15% on every sale you send us. Want me to add you to our program?

It names one real page, says what you make, and asks one thing.

## Who are you looking for?

You want people whose readers are already looking for what you sell. In our scan of 30 public Shopify brands on 22 October 2026, RecruitAffiliates.ai showed 2,924 people. For 1,877 of them (64%), the strongest page found was a review, roundup or comparison. A **roundup** is a page that ranks or lists several brands, such as "best skincare brands." Blog-style pages were 20%, and podcasts were 14%. TikTok, Instagram and newsletters made up the rest, 75 people. "Review-style" is a label for the page, not the kind of publisher ([our scan data](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/who-promotes-shopify-brands-2026)).

In our scan, few of the people shown were social creators (75 of 2,924, about 3%). Most were writers of pages that already list brands like yours. For a roundup, the writer may only need to add you. We have not measured how often that works.

Not everyone shown is a fit. In a check of 30 random rows, 9 were not promoters at all (about 30%, a range of about 17% to 48% at that sample size). The method is on the [research page](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/research/who-promotes-shopify-brands-2026). Treat the share as rough. Open the page before you write to the person.

## How long does it take?

Plan on two weeks for a first 10 yeses. Our plan for the [first 10 affiliates in 14 days](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/first-10-affiliates-in-14-days) starts with a list of 60 to 100 people, then one follow-up. That is our own plan, not a measured average.

Build the list before you write.

## Should you do it yourself or hire help?

Brands usually take one of three routes.

- **By hand.** You search, copy contact details and send each email from your own inbox. It costs time, not money.
- **With software.** A tool finds the people and drafts the emails. You approve them. RecruitAffiliates.ai works this way, and our [guide to recruitment software](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/best-affiliate-recruitment-software) lists the options.
- **With a person or a network.** Some brands pay a program manager. Others join an affiliate network, which gives them a pool of publishers. Our post on [networks versus direct recruiting](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/affiliate-network-vs-direct-recruiting) covers the trade-offs.

If you are starting from nothing, begin by hand with 20 people. You will learn what to say before you spend anything. Our full [how to recruit affiliates](https://recruitaffiliates.ai/blog/how-to-recruit-affiliates) guide has the method.
