CPA, CPC and CPS: which pay model fits a Shopify brand

Three short codes cover how affiliates get paid. CPS is cost per sale: you pay when someone buys. CPA is cost per action. You pay when someone does a set thing, such as joining a list. Some sites split out CPL, cost per lead. CPC is cost per click: you pay for each visit, whether or not anyone buys.

For a Shopify brand, CPS is the safe default. It matches what you actually want, which is orders. CPC and CPA suit narrower cases, and the tools you use may not offer them at all.

What each pay model rewards

The same code can mean different things on different sites. The table uses the plain meaning. The next section shows where the words split.

The "fits" row is our advice, not a rule from any network.

Why do the words not agree?

Sources use CPA in two ways. Awin is a large network. It defines CPA as the amount you pay "when they drive a sale", either a percent of the order or a flat amount. It defines a lead as a separate type, paid at a fixed amount (Awin help, commission models, 7 September 2026).

Other guides use CPA as the wider word. Offer18 sells ad tracking software. It describes CPA as a fixed fee for an action like a form fill or an app download. It describes CPS as a percent of each sale (Offer18, 27 March 2026). Tapfiliate, an affiliate app, lists CPS, CPL (cost per lead) and CPA as separate models. Its examples include a fixed $15 per sale and $10 per free-trial sign-up (Tapfiliate, 20 July 2026).

So read the setting, not the label. When a network offers "CPA", check whether it pays on a sale or on a sign-up. Offer18 and Tapfiliate are vendors, so treat their guides as how the trade talks. They are not a standard.

What do networks and Shopify apps offer?

Public help pages show a gap between networks and the apps most Shopify brands use. We read each page on 30 October 2026.

The two Shopify apps pay on orders only, going by their own pages. That is a pointer, not proof, so check the app before you plan around a click deal. To compare the apps themselves, see our Shopify affiliate apps guide.

Awin says click commission is worked out once a day, at 2am (the brand's time zone), from the previous day's clicks. It also notes that the CPC tool runs alone or beside CPA and CPL (Awin CPC campaigns, 30 October 2026 check). impact.com says to set limits on clicks or payout in case traffic spikes. It also says brands can't reject clicks under its newer setup. You steer with payout rules instead (impact.com, 30 October 2026 check).

How much is a click worth?

Here is a worked example you can reuse. A click is worth what it brings in. Take your commission per sale and multiply it by the share of clicks that buy.

Per-click price = commission per sale x share of clicks that buy

Say your average order is $60 and you pay 10%. That is $6 per sale. The conversion rates below are assumptions for the example. Use your own store numbers.

Share of clicks that buyPay per click that costs the same as CPSWhat you pay per sale at $0.25 a click
1%$0.06$25.00
2%$0.12$12.50
3%$0.18$8.33

Read the last column as cost per sale if you paid $0.25 a click. At 2%, you would pay $12.50 for a sale that earns the affiliate $6 under CPS. You pay $6.50 more than the $6 commission a sale deal would cost. The $0.25 is made up. impact.com's help page uses $0.10 as a default and $0.25 for one product group as examples. Those are teaching numbers, not market prices.

A click price only matches CPS if your real share of buying clicks holds. A CPS deal never has that problem, because you pay nothing until the order lands. Our guide to what a Shopify program should pay shows how to check a rate against your margin.

What does a typical Shopify brand pay?

We read the public affiliate pages of 168 Shopify brands on 23 October 2026. Of those, 137 named a base rate, which is the lowest rate a program promises. The middle base rate was 10%. Another 18% of programs gave only an "up to" rate. The full table is in what commission Shopify brands pay.

That scan reads what brands publish. It was not built to find click deals, so we can't say how many brands use them.

Is pay per click worth the risk?

Usually not for a small store. You pay for the visit, so every bot, accidental tap and low-intent visitor costs you. impact.com's help page tells brands to cap clicks or payout in case traffic spikes.

We could not find a public, independent figure for invalid clicks in affiliate programs. The numbers that exist come from fraud-detection vendors, cover paid ads and use different definitions of a fake click. We don't quote them. If you test CPC, set a daily cap and watch orders per click. The steps in affiliate fraud in a Shopify program give a monthly check that works for any model.

Pay per click can make sense in one case. A trusted publisher sends a lot of steady traffic and you know their conversion rate from past sales. Then a small click fee on top of a sale commission rewards the effort of driving traffic. Awin allows this: both models can run together, and the partner is paid for both.

When does CPA make sense?

CPA fits when the first step is not a sale. A skincare brand that gives a free quiz and collects an email could pay $2 per sign-up. Do it only when you can turn sign-ups into orders. Work out the value of a sign-up first: the share who buy x average order x margin.

For most stores, the order is the goal, so pay on the order. Tapfiliate suggests CPS for direct e-commerce sales. It suggests CPL for longer sales cycles (Tapfiliate, 20 July 2026). That matches our advice.

Do you need a network for click or action deals?

Often, yes. The apps above pay on orders, while Awin and impact.com document click types. Networks also charge fees on top of what you pay affiliates. Our comparison of affiliate networks and direct recruiting lists the public prices. Most small Shopify brands do well with a percent-of-sale offer and direct outreach. Where RecruitAffiliates.ai fits

RecruitAffiliates.ai finds the people already covering shops like yours, with the page that shows the fit. It looks for a verified email, drafts a personal first email and sends it from your inbox after you approve it. You can state your pay model in that first message.

It doesn't pay anyone or track sales. Your affiliate tool does that. Launch is $79 a month for one brand, with a 7-day free trial and no card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CPA and CPS?

CPS pays on a sale. CPA pays on an action, which can be a sale or something smaller, such as a sign-up. Awin uses CPA to mean a sale, so check what the network counts.

Is CPC the same as pay per click?

Yes. Both mean a flat fee for each visit, whether or not it ends in an order.

Which model do most Shopify brands use?

In our scan, 137 of the 168 Shopify stores named a base rate, with 10% in the middle. The scan was not built to look for click pay, so we can't say how many use it.

Can I mix models?

Yes, on some tools. Awin says a CPC campaign can run beside CPA or CPL, and the partner is paid for both. The Shopify apps we checked list order-based pay only.

Is pay per click too risky for a Shopify brand?

It can be, without limits. You pay before you know a click was real. Set caps, watch orders per click and start small.
