Shopify affiliate program: set one up and fill it well
To start a Shopify affiliate program, do five things in order. Pick an app that tracks sales and pays commission. Set a rate. Write short terms. Recruit your first 20 people. Screen who joins. Setup can be quick, and recruiting takes longer.
An affiliate is someone who sends buyers to your shop and earns a cut of each sale. That cut is the commission. A program is the set of rules you publish: what you pay, how long a click counts, and how people join. This guide covers a program for your own shop. It is not Shopify's own affiliate program, which pays people who refer merchants to Shopify (Shopify, checked 26 October 2026).
What is a Shopify affiliate program?
It is a way to pay for sales after they happen. A blogger, a review site or a creator shares a link to your shop. When a buyer clicks it and buys, the person earns commission. If nobody buys, you pay nothing.
A program has four parts, and an app handles three of them:
- Tracking. The app records each click and sale. It gives each affiliate a link and often a discount code.
- Payouts. The app tells you who is owed what. Some apps also send the money.
- A sign-up page. The place where people apply.
- People. This is the part the app does not give you, and it is where most programs stall.
Which app should you use?
Pick the app by cost and by who you want to attract. Here are five that Shopify brands use. Three prices come from the vendors' own pages, checked 26 October 2026. Social Snowball's comes from our compare page, checked 23 October 2026, because its own pricing page did not load. Prices change, so check before you commit.
| App | First paid plan | Fee on sales | Free plan or trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Collabs | No price listed by Shopify | None listed by Shopify (see our Collabs guide) | Not listed. Invites capped at 100 per 7 days |
| UpPromote | $29.99 a month on Growth | 2% of referral sales on Growth | Free plan up to $3,000 of referral sales a month; 14-day trial |
| GoAffPro | $49 a month on Premium | None listed | Free Hobby plan for stores under 100 daily orders |
| Refersion | $39 a month on Launch | 3% of affiliate-driven sales on Launch | Free marketplace listing only |
| Social Snowball | $249 a month on Snow Day (our page checked 23 October 2026) | 3% of affiliate revenue | None listed |
Sources: UpPromote pricing, GoAffPro pricing, Refersion pricing. For Collabs and Social Snowball, see our pages linked in the table. Shopify's own help page for Collabs lists no price (Shopify Help Center, checked 26 October 2026).
Our view: if you have fewer than a few hundred orders a month, start with a free plan. You can move later. Our UpPromote versus GoAffPro page compares the two free plans, and our Collabs limits guide covers the invite cap.
What commission should you set?
Check the market first. On 23 October 2026 we read the public affiliate pages of 168 Shopify brands. Of those, 137 named a base rate. Among those, the median was 10%, and the middle half sat between 8% and 15%. Beauty and skincare was the one category with a higher median, at 15% (our commission research).
The same study found that 78% of the 73 pages that state a cookie length say 30 days. A cookie window is how long after a click a sale still counts for the affiliate. So 10% and 30 days is the common starting point.
Then check it against your profit. Let's say a product sells for $80 and you keep $36 after the product and shipping. At 10% you pay $8 and keep $28. At 15% you pay $12 and keep $24. If the last number is too thin, lower the rate. Our guide on what commission a Shopify program should pay walks through this, and our guide on what to offer affiliates covers the rest of the offer.
What goes in your terms?
Keep terms to one page. In our view, shorter terms get read. Cover these six points:
- The rate and the cookie window. "10% on every sale. A click counts for 30 days."
- When you pay. For example: "On the 15th of each month, for sales older than 30 days." A delay lets you handle returns.
- Who is not allowed. Say whether coupon sites and paid search on your brand name are out.
- The coupon rule. "Only use the code we give you. Do not post it on coupon sites."
- The disclosure rule. Affiliates must say they earn a commission, close to the link. The US Federal Trade Commission gives the line "I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post" (FTC, checked 26 October 2026). The company is ultimately responsible for what others do for it, so put the exact line in your terms.
- Your right to remove anyone. One sentence.
Our guide on stopping coupon sites joining your program has a sample coupon clause.
How do you recruit your first 20 affiliates?
This is the part most guides skip. An app gives you a sign-up page. It does not give you people. Three places to find them:
- Pages that already list brands like yours. In a scan of 30 public Shopify brands on 22 October 2026, RecruitAffiliates.ai showed a median of 92 possible affiliates per brand, before screening. For 64% of all people shown, the strongest page was a review, roundup or comparison. These writers only have to add you (our scan data).
- Your best customers. People who already buy and talk about you are the easiest yeses.
- Creators on TikTok and Instagram. In the same scan they were a small share (66 of 2,924), so treat them as a bonus.
A roundup is a page that ranks or lists several brands, such as "best skincare brands." Our guide to finding affiliates for a Shopify store shows how to search by hand. Our plan for the first 10 affiliates in 14 days gives you the daily steps.
Shortlist 60 to 100 people for a first wave. That is our rough rule, not a measured one. Keep email 1 short and personal. Ask one thing: will they join? Do not ask for a post.
How do you screen who joins?
Turn off auto-approval in your app. Auto-approval means anyone who fills in the form becomes an affiliate straight away. Then add a "link to where you will promote us" field and read each one for two minutes.
Check three things for each person: the page loads, it was updated recently, and it covers your kind of product. An AI model read the title and address of 30 random rows from our scan and found 9 that were not promoters (our scan data). That is 30% of the sample, so the 92 per brand and the 64% above include some noise.
If you are unsure, approve with a short trial, one code and a review date a month out.
Month-one checklist
- Day 1. Install your app and turn off auto-approval.
- Day 1. Set the rate and cookie window. Write the one-page terms.
- Day 2. Add the sign-up form fields and a "link to where you will promote us" question.
- Day 3. Make a sample order with a test code to check the link and code credit the right person.
- Days 3 to 7. Build a list of 60 to 100 people. Open each page.
- Days 8 to 10. Send the first wave of emails.
- Days 15 to 17. Send one follow-up to those who did not reply.
- Days 18 to 25. Approve and welcome each person. Send a brief with their link and code. Add the disclosure line.
- Day 30. Look at who earned. Thank them and drop anyone who has done nothing.
Mistakes that slow a new program
- Switching on auto-approval and waiting. Anyone can join, including people who do not fit.
- Setting a rate you cannot afford. It is hard to cut later.
- Having no one to ask. A program with a sign-up page and no outreach stays empty.
- No brief for new affiliates. A person who says yes and gets nothing does nothing.
- Skipping the link test. A broken link loses sales you already paid to earn.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start an affiliate program on Shopify?
Install an affiliate app, set a commission and cookie window, write one page of terms, turn off auto-approval, then email the people who already cover products like yours. Our month-one checklist above has the days.
What commission should I offer?
The median public Shopify program that states a rate pays 10%, and beauty pays 15%. Work out your own ceiling from your profit per order, then start a little below it. In our view, a rate is awkward to cut once affiliates know it.
How do I get affiliates?
Do not wait for them to find you. Find review and roundup pages, blogs, podcasts and creators in your niche, and send a short personal email. Invite your best customers as well.
Which app should I use?
Start with a free plan if your sales are small. UpPromote's free plan covers up to $3,000 of referral sales a month and GoAffPro's free plan has unlimited affiliates. Shopify lists no price for Collabs on its help page. Move up when you outgrow the limits.
How long until it works?
Our rough guide, not a measured one, is about a month to get your first handful of active affiliates. Some people reply within days, and others take a few weeks. Expect most to say nothing, and judge the program by who earns, not by who signs up.
